Social Media for Travel
While the start-ups and many of the social media folks are in Austin at SXSW this weekend, I'm just coming up from air from back-to-backs with Social Media Strategies for the Travel Industry and GTD (Getting Things Done Summit - David Allen's conference).
The travel industry is an interesting one....just like all the corporates, they want to figure out what the best tools are for their specific problems, what will best address their communications needs and so on.
Interesting line-up, ranging from InterContinental Hotels Group, Disney, Orbitz, Priceline, Marriott International, Southwest Airlines, Dapper.net, RealTravel, TravelMuse, Mobissimo, STA and LinkedIn to Gay Cities, TripIt, Viator, Uptake and Milestone. To get a better idea of the blend, see below.
I learned that some budgets for a specific city may be in the $200-250K range, so you'd think that an entire country could be 10 or 20 times that number, but it was in a few cases, only double. I think this is largely because people are uncertain of the value-add of some of these tools, analytics are still clumsy and because we're in a recession.
