On Losing my Dad

Rodney_1956 Sadly, I lost my father to esophagus cancer this week. In honor of my dad, give someone a hug or do something nice for another human being you barely know today.

His greatest gift was his love of people and his ability to connect with others and.....oh yeah, says an old childhood friend, "he knew how to tell a great story and could sell any idea to anyone. Yes, even ice to an eskimo."

That's a great tribute to your dad, to have people do something nice for a stranger.

I am really sorry for your dad.

I will try to do something nice for a stranger as you suggest.

I think your dad was really proud of you.

Fathers are very special and without wonderful Fathers, life is simply not as fulfilling.

I hope as you grieve his memories bring smiles to your face that you will keep in your heart forever.

Renee, I am so sorry to hear this sad news. We had three deaths during the holidays and all of them took their toll. You are a living tribute to his life. Send him your love (he will feel it) and remember him in your thoughts every day. That will lift you up, and keep the sun shining.

I hope you had a chance to hug your Dad one last time as you must have meant more to him then he could have ever articulated.

Thanks for all your warm comments, thoughts, prayers, wishes, emails, Facebook messages.

Oddly enough I was closer to my grandfather who raised me, than my father and yet being in an ICU unit for a few days watching him slowly die before my eyes was heart wrenching and eerie at the same time. The obvious part of your direct blood line from where you came and share similar gestures, a laugh, a freckle on a hand. All of it.

The eerie part was physically observing each part of the process that a human body literally SHUTS down - how blood stops going to the limbs because the limbs are not a necessary part of breathing, existing. The breathing. And missing a breath as they get close to the end.

Getting all of your messages means a lot, so thank you, thank you, thank you.
