Beware the Friendly Skies
Trying to book a mileage flight this morning, I learned that they won't even check availability unless your account has enough miles for that itinerary. However, they'll be happy to sell you the miles to meet the threshold and then tell you there are no flights available.
I spoke to a supervisor in Chicago who said the agents couldn't confirm or hold reservations, but could at least check availabilty. So I tested it with three different agents, but none would search. Fly the unfriendly skies.

Never fly United.
Drain down your mileage and get them behind you. With Virgin flying out of SFO to NYC, there really is no reason to fly them any more.
They need someone to a hard reset - just like a hotel. Redecorate all the planes, get rid of the customer facing staff, and get their service back up to snuff.
Oh -- They *can't* do that...They can't can their horrible staff, they don't have the money to redecorate, and their too busy fighting with each other to turn things around.
Just bail.

American Airlines is getting worse by the minute as well. Nearly every flight I've taken this year has had some sort of technical or service related issue.
