On Indian Art
Lakshmi's post A Feast for the Eye, recaps her passion for collecting, particularly books and art. Ah yes, with every painting she owns, there is a story. The same holds true for me and probably most of us who are lovers of visual feasts.
She recounts her love of Indian art in particularly and says that when she sees pieces, she feels as if she is "discovering the journey of a few generations through my beloved homeland. These paintings tell me stories – of struggles, success, enquiry, elation and every other mood one could imagine.
They put a smile on my face, they disturb me, they make me question and they make me happy! The subdued serenity of Gaitonde and Ram Kumar, squeaky lines of Jogen Chowdhury, the shutters of Atul Dodiya, the brilliance of Bala’s creations, the vibrancy of Hussain, the very rare Swaminathans, the mystical mythology of Tyeb Mehta’s work, the strong lines of Akbar Padamsee’s nudes and Souza’s works , the brilliance of Broota peeking through black and white sketches, the sincerity of Vaikuntham, the talent of Anju Dodiya and the list could fill pages."
If you are interested in broadening your taste, check out her post for more details.
