RSS Impact on PR.....Again

I don't get this: the ongoing saga of RSS killing off the role of the publicist. It's never just been about the "press release," nor is it just about pitching the press. The smart ones have been doing the value-add activities outlined by Ochman for awhile. I'm not sure that the PR industry has really tapped into podcasting yet, but it will come.

Changing habits takes time - communications is no different than any other industry. Just remember how long it took to get lawyers and doctors to move from DOS to Windows a decade ago.

She quotes Udell as saying that "PR agents" would become coaches and mentors, brokering connections and helping individuals within companies develop communications strategies. Exactly. RSS is helping us, not hurting us.

The comment on my blog that says it all is from the publicist who notes that most PR people are not tech savvy. Why the hell not is what I want to know. So RSS freaks them out, just like blogs do, and just like the web, sigh, still does.

It was just last week that a publicist sent me an unsolicited press release as an email attachment and then was genuinely surprised when i said that I don't open attachements. She said she hadn't thought about the fact that journos might be worried about email viruses.

So in the case of the PR industry, it seems that changing habits may take forever. sigh.
