Snocap Out of the Gate

The BBC has a great article today on Napster creator Shawn Fanning's new project, a licensed file-sharing service with an almost unlimited selection of tracks.

Alex Moskalyuk, and Slashdot posted briefs on his new venture Snocap a couple of weeks ago.

With the goal of opening the market up, his new gig will give consumers greater access to licensed downloads, while affording the record labels some degree of control over file-sharing. It also allows record companies to specify restrictions, including how many times a track can be played before the user is required to buy it and whether it can be burned to CD, or shared.

Right now, I don't even bother since there are limited tracks available, the cost to download is too high (in my opinion), iTunes is proprietary and restrictive, and the last time I had Kazaa on my laptop, it came to a grinding halt, so much so that it had to be shipped back to HP.

Hi!

Have you checked out Weed already?

Allows file-sharing and pays the artists AND also everybody who helps distributing the music! Whether by P2P, on a website or CD.

Recently there was a good article about Weed at Wired.com, if you've missed it, here you can read it:
http://www.wired.com/news/digiwood/0,1412,65774,00.html

From a press release yesterday about Weed receiving an investment at:
http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20041202005448&newsLang=en

"We believe Shared Media Licensing and their Weed(SM) file-sharing technology represent the future of music file-sharing on the Internet," said Arthur Rubinfeld, President and Founder of AIRVISION. "They have an innovative business model that is rapidly gaining widespread acceptance among many of the world's top musicians and their fans. Weed has solved the problem with Internet file sharing in a revolutionary way which we believe will capture the imagination of other businesses on the Internet."

And Weed's site is here:

Musical greetings,
Lilian Philips
wenmistress Sananda Maitreya
(His music tops Weed's Top 10 as well as their Top 100!)
